ETSY REVIEW, WHY BUY HANDMADE PRODUCTS?
Etsyis an e-commerce site or rather a platform bringing together several designers from around the world. You will find almost two million sellers and over 30 million buyers so far! The idea is to bring together the most freelance creators online and Etsy takes care of facilitating the logistics for deliveries worldwide. Etsy reviews on the web are very positive, but are they really true? What are the traps, and can we really find good deals? After 3 years purchase on websites like Esty, I think it is really worthful to write an objective Etsy Review.
ETSY REVIEW: BUT WHAT IS DIFFERENT FROM EBAY REALLY?
Etsy is an American start-up e-shop that has been around for a few years now. Part of an ingenious idea, Etsy wants to highlight quality products what are handmade by professionals with expertise in crafting particularly. And it’s a big success. This may seem surprising when you see the success of sites like Aliexpress that are the complete opposite of this initiative. See our Aliexpress Review for more information. What Etsy has really managed to create is a “local web” platform, meaning that you will mostly find products that are normally available only from the local craftsman. The result is simple, original products and quality are not always available at the most attractive prices. Moreover, as a seller, if your product is not considered creative enough, Etsy reserved the right to remove certain products to keep a more unique inventory possible. You will still find some negative comments about Etsy, and these can be justified by the reasons below:
- Long delivery times (Depending on the location of the seller)
- Very high shipping costs
- Potentially customs fees
On the other hand, the opinions are generally very positive as regards the quality of the products received and especially the legitimacy of the photos compared to these products. Which is usually a recurring and very annoying problem on another cheap Chinese website.
ETSY REVIEW: ADVICE ON OUR PREFERRED SELLERS
It was time to find a “marketplace” bringing together only a minority of Asian sellers! The majority of sellers here are based in the USA, UK and other European countries. This obviously explains a higher price on average but at least we are guaranteed to have an irreproachable service (provided by the seller and Etsy via the Buyer Production). A little advice all the same, it is important to contact the seller before your purchase to be sure he/she is active. If it confirms that it is active you can buy without any nasty surprises. Being a bit chauvinistic, we have put together a list of American designers that you will find below.
ETSY REVIEW: BECOME A SELLER ON ETSY, HOW TO DO IT?
Just like on Ebay, it is possible for you to become a seller on Etsy in exchange for a few small fees (e.g. $0.20 to post your products automatically, 5% of transaction fee …). If you are a designer and plan to live with your passion maybe Etsy is for you! You will find more information to create your shop here.
ETSYY REVIEW, LESS POSITIVE OPINIONS …
CUSTOMS DUTIES & VAT ABOUT ETSY
As mentioned earlier in this Etsy review, Etsy is a marketplace which means that sellers from all sides can sell their products. No problem regarding VAT and customs when products are sent from the European Union. Same for the US, the parcels being very little verified by the customs with products coming from this origin. The problem is rather when you receive products from Asia, in this case it is possible that you will have to pay a surplus at the reception (Although the probability is rather weak ….). Our tip: if the seller is based in Asia, ask them to send the product as “Gift”. This could possibly save you trouble.
FOLLOW SELLER NOTICES ABOUT ETSY
Unfortunately, as on all platforms of e-commerce connection, you will also find sellers with little scruple (less than Wish or Aliexpress …). To avoid any bad surprises and find best sell on Etsy, remember to take a look at the seller’s notes and comments.
SOME PRODUCTS ARE NOT HANDMADE
Etsy allows you to sort products by category (Handmade, Vintage …). However, some branded products are not actually handmade. We suspect that it is very complicated for Etsy to judge whether a product is handmade or not, especially since it is the seller who will give the information to the site. The best way to be sure is to ask the seller who will give you more information. We have gathered several handmade shoes for women here.
DELIVERY FEES THAT ACCUMULATE
A big flat on Etsy is the delivery costs that can make the note rather salty. We paid more than $15 for our last purchase sent from the UK. And of course, the costs accumulate 3/4 of your order … If possible, we advise you to contact the seller to see if it is possible to choose another delivery that DHL, even if they will be longer. Up to you!
RETURNS ARE AT YOUR EXPENSE
It is possible to return your products from on Etsy for the following reasons:
- 7 days right of withdrawal
- The seller sent the wrong product
- The product has a quality problem
In case you return the product for reasons of bad designs, the seller will bear the shipping costs. However, unlike Amazon, the returns charge will be at your expense, in case you want to return the product simply because you do not like it.
ETSY, ALIEXPRESS, EBAY OR JOOM. WHICH SITE TO CHOOSE?
We have a habit of comparing the site in review with several Chinese sites of the moment, the Chinese sites being the theme of this site. However, it seems to us that the visitors going to the websites like Etsy are quite different from the fact that they seek priority quality and originality. Etsy is so unique that it can only be compared to one site, Ebay. But in this case, we rather recommend Etsy which is in our opinion, a great site.
- Unique website
- Quality products
- Very original products
- Realistic product pictures
- High prices
- Delivery time is a bit long
- Extremely expensive shipping costs
